Your waterproofing questions.
How much does roof terrace waterproofing cost?
The price of waterproofing a roof terrace in Mauritius depends on the area, the condition of the surface, the repairs needed (cracks, upstands, drains) and the solution chosen. Our agent draws up a detailed, itemised quote, with no obligation, after seeing the roof and tracking down the source of the leaks during a free visit.
How long does the work take?
How long a waterproofing job takes depends on the area, the repairs needed on the surface and the weather: the products go on a dry surface, in dry weather. In Mauritius, it is therefore best to schedule waterproofing outside the heavy rains of the austral summer. Timescales are set out in Nova’s quote.
Membrane, liquid resin or reflective paint: which waterproofing should I choose?
A waterproofing membrane is laid in rolls over large flat areas; a liquid resin is applied by roller or brush and easily follows corners, upstands and uneven surfaces; a reflective paint’s first job is to bounce back the sun’s heat and, depending on the product and the condition of the roof, it may or may not add to the waterproofing. The right choice depends on the surface, the slope, how the roof terrace is used and its exposure. In Mauritius, our agent recommends the right solution after an on-site inspection.
When should I waterproof my roof in Mauritius?
Ideally before the austral summer, from December to April, the season of heavy rain and strong winds in Mauritius. Waterproofing goes on a dry surface: a job carried out in the dry season runs more smoothly and protects the house before the first downpours. If a leak appears in the middle of the rainy season, our agent can still carry out the inspection and suggest the right weather window.
How can I tell if my roof terrace has a waterproofing problem?
The most common signs of failing waterproofing on a roof terrace: watermarks or blistering paint on the ceiling after rain, hairline cracks in the slab, open joints, a membrane peeling away or puddles that don’t drain. A leak doesn’t always drip directly below its source, as water can travel through the slab before it shows. That is why, in Mauritius, our agent tracks down the source of the leaks on site before any quote.
Do you also treat damp walls?
Yes, Nova also treats damp walls in Mauritius: cracks, damp patches, mould, blistering paint and rising damp. Our agent first finds out where the water is coming from (through the façade, a leak, condensation or moisture from the ground), then proposes the right treatment for the wall, with damp-proof paint if needed.
What is rising damp and how is it treated?
Rising damp is moisture from the ground climbing into the base of the walls: blistering paint, saltpetre, damaged skirting boards or a musty smell at floor level. Repainting is not enough: the base of the wall has to be treated against damp, then given a suitable finish. Nova treats rising damp all over Mauritius, after an on-site inspection.
What does reflective paint on a roof do?
Reflective paint, applied to a corrugated iron roof or a concrete slab, reflects part of the sun’s rays instead of absorbing them: the roof heats up less, and so does the house. Under the Mauritian sun, it is a useful complement to insulation to cut down on air conditioning. Our agent checks the condition of the surface before recommending reflective paint.
Can you repair cracks in walls and façades?
Yes: Nova repairs cracks in walls and façades with an anti-crack treatment before painting, to stop water getting in and the cracks reappearing straight away. Our agent first looks at the type of crack, surface or deeper, to propose the right repair for your home in Mauritius.
How do I look after a roof terrace once it’s waterproofed?
A waterproofed roof terrace is easy to look after: keep drains and gutters clear (leaves, sand, debris), avoid drilling into or damaging the coating, and take a look after heavy rain or strong winds. How long waterproofing lasts depends on the surface, the product, sun exposure and this regular upkeep. At the end of the job, our agent shows you what to keep an eye on.
Does salty sea air damage waterproofing?
By the sea in Mauritius, salt spray, wind and sun wear coatings out faster, and salt rusts unprotected metal parts. The choice of product and care over the details (upstands, fixings, drains) therefore matter all the more for long-lasting waterproofing. Our agent takes your home’s exposure into account when recommending a solution.
Can waterproofing, insulation and reflective paint be combined?
Yes, and on a roof terrace in Mauritius it often makes sense: waterproofing keeps the water out, reflective paint limits how hot the slab gets and insulation reduces the heat passing into the rooms. Nova handles all three with a single point of contact and a single itemised quote.
