FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your bathroom questions.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost?

The price of a bathroom in Mauritius depends on the area, the condition of the water supply and drainage, the fixtures (built-in or freestanding bath, walk-in shower, vanity unit and basin, shower screen) and the tiles chosen. Our agent surveys the room during a free visit, then draws up a detailed, itemised quote, with no obligation.

Can the bath be replaced with a shower?

Yes, it’s a common request: replacing a bath with a level walk-in shower frees up space and makes access easier. This needs a drain that allows enough fall under the shower tiles. Our agent checks the drain and the fall during the visit.

What is a walk-in shower?

A walk-in shower is a level-access shower, with no raised tray, tiled flush with the floor and closed off by a glass screen. It needs a fall towards the drain and careful waterproofing under the tiles, both included in the bathrooms Nova builds in Mauritius. A niche built into the wall is a neat alternative to shelves.

Built-in or freestanding bath: which should I choose?

A built-in bath, panelled against one or more walls, makes the most of the space and is easy to pair with a separate shower. A freestanding bath, placed freely in the room, needs more space but becomes the centrepiece of the bathroom, especially in a semi-outdoor bathroom. Our agent checks the space and the drainage to advise you.

Do you build outdoor bathrooms?

Yes: Nova builds semi-outdoor bathrooms in Mauritius, open to a tropical garden, in stone such as basalt, with a walk-in shower or a freestanding bath. Plumbing, waterproofing and finishing are included. Our agent recommends materials suited to the sun, rain and humidity of the island.

Which tiles should I choose for a bathroom?

Large formats to keep joints to a minimum, zellige for a handmade look or stone for a natural style: bathroom tiles are chosen with our agent. On the floor and in the shower, non-slip tiles are preferable. In the humid Mauritian climate, well-finished joints and good ventilation make cleaning easier.

How do I avoid damp and mould in the bathroom?

In the hot, humid climate of Mauritius, a bathroom needs to get rid of steam: a window, a vent or an extractor fan depending on the room. Nova provides waterproofing under the tiles, moisture-resistant boards for partitions and finishes suited to damp rooms. Our agent checks the ventilation from the first visit.

Is plumbing included in the renovation?

Yes: for a bathroom, Nova redoes the water supply and drainage, carries out the waterproofing and fits the fixtures, with the same team as the tiling and finishing. Moving a shower, basin or toilet depends on the drainage, which our agent checks during the visit. Plumbing work on its own is also possible in Mauritius.

How long does the work take?

How long a bathroom renovation takes depends on the area, stripping out what is there, the pipework to redo, the fixtures and the tiling. Timescales are set out in Nova’s quote. If it’s your only bathroom, let our agent know so the job can be organised accordingly.

Can the bathroom be renovated along with the rest of the house?

Yes: the bathroom can be part of a full renovation in Mauritius, along with the kitchen, electrics, floors or decoration, in a single schedule. Nova coordinates all the trades, with a single point of contact from the quote to the end of the job.

What should I prepare before the visit for a bathroom?

A few photos of your current bathroom, its approximate dimensions, pictures of styles you like and an idea of budget help our agent prepare for the visit. Attach them to the quote request or send them on WhatsApp. During the free visit, our agent surveys the water supply, drainage and ventilation.

How do I get a quote for a bathroom in Mauritius?

For a bathroom, describe your project in a few clicks in Nova’s quote request, with photos of the room as it is now if you can. Our agent will call you back within 24 to 72 hours, on WhatsApp or by phone, to arrange a free visit anywhere in Mauritius. You then receive a detailed, itemised quote, free and with no obligation.

Do you work all over the island?

Yes, Nova works across the whole of Mauritius: the North (Grand Baie, Triolet, Pereybère), the West (Tamarin, Flic-en-Flac, Rivière Noire), the Centre (Moka, Quatre Bornes, Curepipe), the East (Flacq, Belle Mare, Trou d’Eau Douce) and the South (Mahébourg, Souillac, Bel Ombre). Give your town or village in the quote request: our agent will call you back within 24 to 72 hours to arrange a free visit to your home.
