FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your rainwater harvesting questions.

How much does a rainwater harvesting system cost?

The price of a rainwater harvesting system in Mauritius depends on the capacity and number of tanks, whether the tank is above or below ground, the pump, the length of pipework to lay and the condition of the gutters. Our agent assesses all of this during a free visit, then draws up a detailed, itemised quote, with no obligation.

How does a rainwater harvesting system work?

The roof collects the rain and the gutters carry it to a filter that catches leaves and debris, then the water is stored in a closed tank. An overflow carries off the excess during heavy rain. A booster pump then sends the water under pressure to where it is used in the villa: toilets, washing machine, garden taps or the whole house.

Can a tank supply the villa during water cuts?

Yes: in Mauritius, a tank connected to the mains fills up when the water is on, then the pump supplies this reserve to the whole villa during cuts. It can be combined with rainwater harvesting, with separate circuits depending on use. Our agent sizes the reserve according to the number of people and how often the water is cut off in your area.

Is rainwater drinkable?

No: without suitable treatment, harvested rainwater is not meant for drinking or cooking. It is, however, fine for toilets, the washing machine, watering the garden and washing cars and terraces. Nova keeps the rainwater pipes separate and labelled, and your drinking water still comes from the mains.

What tank capacity should I choose?

The capacity of a water harvesting tank depends on the roof area, the rainfall in your region (far heavier on the central plateau than in the west of Mauritius), the number of people and the planned uses. Our agent works out the useful capacity during the visit, with one or more tanks depending on the space available.

Above-ground or underground tank: which should I choose?

An above-ground tank sits on a concrete slab, with little building work, and stays easy to reach for maintenance. An underground tank disappears from the garden and keeps the water cool and out of the light, but needs excavation and access for machinery. In Mauritius, our agent advises you based on the land, the space and the look you want.

How do I keep mosquitoes and algae out of a tank?

A water harvesting tank must stay closed and opaque: light encourages algae, and standing water open to the air attracts mosquitoes. Nova installs closed tanks, a filter upstream and an overflow protected by a mesh, so the stored water is kept away from light and insects.

What maintenance does a rainwater harvesting system need?

Maintaining a rainwater harvesting system is simple: clean the gutters and leaf filter regularly, especially before the austral summer and after heavy rain, drain and clean the tank from time to time, and check the pump. Our agent explains these steps when the system is commissioned.

Can you work on an existing installation?

Yes: Nova can connect a new tank to your existing gutters, add a tank to a reserve that is too small, replace a pump or redo pipework, anywhere in Mauritius. Our agent checks the existing set-up during the visit and tells you what can be kept.

Does an above-ground tank need to be secured?

Yes: an empty above-ground tank is light and can move in strong winds. In Mauritius, Nova installs it on a concrete slab and secures it according to its location and exposure. Before the heavy rain season, it is advisable to check the fixings and clear the gutters and filter so the water flows freely.

Can you install it during a renovation or outdoor landscaping project?

Yes: rainwater harvesting fits easily into a full renovation or an outdoor landscaping project, in the same schedule and with a single point of contact. The pipes are run before pouring the slabs or laying the deck, and the tank has its place in the garden plan.

How do I get a quote for rainwater harvesting in Mauritius?

For rainwater harvesting, describe your project in a few clicks in Nova’s quote request, with photos of the roof, the gutters and where the tank would go if you can. Our agent will call you back within 24 to 72 hours, on WhatsApp or by phone, to arrange a free visit anywhere in Mauritius. You then receive a detailed, itemised quote, free and with no obligation.

Do you work all over the island?

Yes, Nova works across the whole of Mauritius: the North (Grand Baie, Triolet, Pereybère), the West (Tamarin, Flic-en-Flac, Rivière Noire), the Centre (Moka, Quatre Bornes, Curepipe), the East (Flacq, Belle Mare, Trou d’Eau Douce) and the South (Mahébourg, Souillac, Bel Ombre).
