FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your carport questions.

How much does a carport cost?

The price of a carport in Mauritius depends on the number of spaces (one, two or three), the dimensions, the material (aluminium, timber, bamboo or concrete), the roofing, the cladding, the lighting and any solar panels. Our agent surveys the driveway during a free visit, then draws up a detailed quote, with no obligation.

Do I need permission to build a carport?

For a carport in Mauritius, it depends on the local authority and the project: area, position on the plot, lean-to or freestanding. The formalities are not the same everywhere: our agent tells you which ones to plan for during the visit, before work starts.

Aluminium, timber, bamboo or concrete: which material for a carport?

Aluminium doesn’t rust, needs little maintenance and allows a slim structure, lean-to or freestanding. Timber brings warmth but needs regular upkeep; bamboo, often as screening, gives dappled shade and a tropical feel; concrete offers a solid structure that can be clad with timber slats. Our agent helps you choose the carport material to suit the style of the house, its exposure and the upkeep you are happy with.

Which material is best near the sea?

By the sea in Mauritius, salt and wind speed up the corrosion of unprotected metals and the ageing of timber. Aluminium, which doesn’t rust, is well suited to a carport near the sea; timber is still an option if it is treated and maintained. Our agent takes exposure to salt and wind into account to advise you on site.

Will a carport stand up to strong winds?

In Mauritius, a carport has to be designed with the wind in mind: anchoring, posts, how the roofing is fixed and its position relative to the house. Our agent assesses wind exposure during the visit and takes it into account when choosing the structure and anchoring. Before forecast strong winds, remove or tie down any light items and follow official guidance.

Can solar panels be fitted on the carport?

Yes: a solar carport shelters the car and carries solar panels, without taking up space on the house roof. Nova also installs solar panels on the ground, on a metal structure, on the roof or on the façade, anywhere in Mauritius. Our agent looks at orientation, shading and the structure during the visit to suggest the best location.

Lean-to or freestanding carport: what’s the difference?

A lean-to carport rests on the house wall on one side: it takes up less space and extends the façade. A freestanding carport stands on its own posts and can go wherever is most practical on the plot, without touching the house. Our agent advises you based on the space available, access to the driveway and the condition of the wall.

How is rainwater drained from a carport?

The carport roof is given a slope so that water doesn’t sit on it, then the water is collected and channelled away from the driveway and the foundations. During the heavy rains of the austral summer in Mauritius, good drainage prevents puddles and splashes on the façade. Our agent includes the slope and drainage in the carport plan.

How do I look after a carport?

Carport upkeep depends on the material: aluminium simply needs washing with water, timber needs a stain or wood oil from time to time, and bamboo weathers faster in sun and rain. By the sea in Mauritius, regular rinsing with fresh water limits salt deposits. How long it lasts depends on the material, the exposure and this upkeep.

Can lighting and a timber ceiling be added to the carport?

Yes: recessed spotlights, a timber-clad ceiling, a lattice screen or bamboo screening are chosen with our agent. The carport lighting is planned from the start, so the cables can run through the structure before the cladding goes on. The carport then becomes a lit, welcoming entrance, not just a shelter for the car.

How long does it take to install a carport?

How long it takes to install a carport depends on its size, the material, the anchoring and the finishes (cladding, lighting, solar panels). Timescales are set out in Nova’s quote, after the visit and once the plan is approved.

Can you do the carport along with the driveway and garden?

Yes: Nova also builds concrete slabs, driveways, outdoor lighting, pergolas and fences in Mauritius. The carport can therefore be part of a complete outdoor project, with a single point of contact and a single itemised quote.

How do I get a quote for a carport in Mauritius?
